The Bolshoi is an Opera and theater company in Moscow, Russia. It mainly has performance of ballets and operas. Prince Peter Urussov and Michale Maddox founded the Bolshoi in 1776.
During earlier days they usually gave performance in private homes, but later acquired the Petrovka. Thereafter in 1780 they began with performing operas and ballets. The existing building situated at Teatralnaya square was built in 1825 to replace the Petrovaka Theater which had been destroyed in a fire break out in 1805.
The theater was designed by well know architect Osip Bove. Around that time Russian theater were suppose to be grand property and a total of two theaters were there in the entire country. The first one was located in Moscow and the other one being at St Petersburg. They were specifically distributed by category, one being only for ballets and operas and the second one was for tragedies and comedies.
