Which Is The Largest Fresh Water Turtle?

There are several species of freshwater turtles that can grow to a large size like the Asian Giant Softshell Turtle and the Narrow-headed Softshell which are believed to be the largest fresh water turtles in the world growing over 4 ft (about 1.3 m); according to some sources the Giant Softshell Turtle could weigh up to 180 kg (400 lbs). Another large fresh water turtle is the Giant South American River Turtle also known as Arrau which is known to weigh 90 kg (200 lbs).

The most famous fresh water turtle is the large Alligator Snapping Turtle found in streams, lakes and swamps mainly in North America. The turtles are distinct in their appearance resembling prehistoric reptiles due to the presence of ridges on their shell and the shape of their jaws and the mottled nature of their skin. They weigh on an average 80 kg (175 lbs) though the Tennessee Aquarium one that weighs 110 kg (about250 lbs). Alligator Snapping turtles are primarily carnivorous with fish being their principal food.
