With the limited information you disclosed it is difficult but perhaps you have the picture in picture on this would display a box and if you have cable might show the black screen since a lot of cable does not function with PIP especially if there are premium channels. The remote should have a button or area with PIP. Picture in Picture, if this is the issue you would turn it off somewhere in this selection area.
