Rainbow first aired in 1972, on ITV. It eventually ended in 1992, when Thames Television lost its ITV franchise. Nick Jr. (a section of the digital channel Nickelodeon), stated in February 2006 that they would be showing repeats of Rainbow.
Characters included the presenter of the show (Geoffrey Hayes who took over from David Cook), Bungle (a big brown bear), Zippy (a rugby ball attached to a body), George (a pink hippo), Sunshine and Moony (originally main characters), Rod, Jane and Freddy (musicians), Zippo (Zippy's cousin), Telltale (a music group) and Dawn (the next-door neighbour).
The programme made a re-appearance in 1994 and 1995, with newly designed characters and no presenter. In 1996 and 1997, it made another re-appearance, this time in the form of ten minute shorts. Both of the new shows were not as successful as the original show.
In 1975, Rainbow won the Society of Film and Television Arts Award for Best Children's Programme.
