Trachea also called as wind pipe is tubular structure lying ventral to the oesophagus and extends to the thorax cavity. It is one of the most important part of the respiratory system. In vertebrates it consist of about 20 C-shaped cartilage rings which prevent the air passage from collapsing. It is the passage through which oxygen containing  air from the nostrils passes on to the lungs. Tachea is lined with the mucus secreting cells. The air passing through it also contain some dust particles, on passage through wind pipe these dust particles are trapped in the mucus thus the air is purified before entering into the lungs. In addition it is lined with the cilia that entrap foreign particles and by their movement push it upward to the pharynx through lyranx or helps its swallowing into the stomach.
