Babylon basically is a Greek variation of Akkadian Babilu meaning "Gateway of the god". Initially Babylon was mentioned in a dated tablet during the time of power of Sargon of Akkad. As time passed by its strength and population diminished. Post the 20th century BC, it was engaged by Amorites who were nomadic Semitic clan who reached the southern Mesopotamia from the west.

The primary Babylonian Dynasty was recognised by Sumu-abum, but the city-state continued to rule the neighboring territory until the time it was declared the Capital of Hammurabi's kingdom. It's an ancient city in the Mesopotamian civilisation and you can find the location in the Babil province of present day Iraq. The civilisation was very developed one and compared to other civilisations of that era, it was considered as the most advanced.

Babylon was considered as a holy city around 2300 BC and also the seat of Neo-Babylonian Empire. Some experts believe that it was in this city where Alexander the Great took his last breath while moving with his entourage to conquer the world.

The city is also well known for the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which is considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Babylon was the name of an ancient city which was located in Mesopotamia, now in present day Iraq, in Il Hillah. The ruins of the city can be seen in the Babil Province, which is located around eighty kilo meters to the southern direction of the capital, Baghdad. It used to be the Holy City of Babylonia, as well as the main throne of the Neo Babylonian Empire at different periods in time. In the Bible, it can be found under the name of Babel.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon constituted on of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. The first recorded mention of the city is on a dated tablet coming from the reign of Sargon of Akkad. In the following years after that, it influence and population gradually decreased. It is also believed that for two certain time periods, Babylon had the distinction of being the largest city on the planet.
