Is There Really Prozac In The UK's Water Supply?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sadly yes, this is not a rumour but a reality !  Since 2004, concern has been growing that so much Prozac is prescribed each year that it is passing through into the water supply and is supposed to be building up in rivers and underground water reserves.
Even the Environment Agency, a Government body has admitted that it is building up in the water supply !
Environmental campaigners claim that this is actually hidden mass medication.  However, the Government claim that the amounts in the water supply are so watered down that it is unlikely to keep us all happy  (and judging by how grumpy most people are, it doesn't seem to be having any effect).  However, if it does build up then who is to say how watered down it will be in the future and more importantly, what about all the wildlife and fish who live in the rivers.  They will also be affected, but to what degree no one yet knows.
