Life experience.
You need to have paid attention enough in English class to be able to spell correctly (or at least reasonably well), use correct grammar and punctuation and put together a salable manuscript (meaning it will sell well). Most importantly, you need to be able to write a kick-butt Book Proposal that convinces a perspective publisher that they need to publish your work. Always have a back-up plan; most wannabe authors just don't see there dream come to fruition -- even if you do, you may not make a living; there are only so many Steven Kings in the world. Go to college and major in a back-up plan, such as journalism. You could get a job at a newspaper if your dream of being a published author is never realized. Good luck.
