We pulled up the carpet and just want the hardwood floor down and after we get the glue off we are staining it but we can't figure out how to get the glue off without the harmful fumes of the chemicals

The heat gun was the best option after trying several other items (mineral spirits, Krud Kutter, etc..). This is a slow process, but well worth the effort.
