    It is generally believed that the Vikings were the first to sail to America in the year 1000 even though Christopher Columbus has been credited with discovering the new world. America was named after an Italian merchant, Amerigo Vespucci.

      Amerigo Vespucci was the one to discover America first, but he didn't know that, so he didn't tell anyone. After him, Christopher Columbus sailed and found a new land, which was America. Unlike Amerigo Vespucci, he told the people that he found new land, and people realized that Amerigo Vespucci was the one who found it first.

      The Vikings didn't have anything to do with this story...
