There are eleven players in a cricket team. A player who possesses the skills which are required for batting is known as a specialist batsman. The batsmen who bat at the start of the innings of a team (in other words, the batsmen whose positions in the batting order are numbers one and two) are known as the opening batsmen of the team. A person who bats at number eleven is known as a tail-ender. Most teams prefer to play six specialist batsmen. Batsmen can either be left-handed or right-handed.

Bowlers can also either be left-handed or right-handed, and they can either be fast bowlers or spinners (there are leg-spinners, off-spinners and left-arm spinners).

In addition, most teams have a person who is adept in both batting and bowling. A person who can bat and bowl well is known as an all-rounder. All teams have a wicket-keeper who stands behind the stumps. The squad also consists of three or four substitutes, including a twelfth man.
