There are lots of instances where the use of a single word can completely throw a conversation off course. Here are some examples.
An American man talking about wearing suspenders to keep his pants up isn't into cross dressing. He is referring to his need to wear braces to prevent his trousers from falling down.
By now we are all aware from watching TV that you put your case in the trunk of an automobile. You don't get under the bonnet to fix the car, you get under the hood. Bumpers are fenders. And don't mention you drive a saloon car or an American might think you drive a mobile pub – a saloon car in the US is a sedan.
While you might put your house on the Americans having different words for briefcase and washer (as in nuts and bolts), the American for these items are briefcase and washer.
