According to the US Census estimate of 2005, Houston has a population exceeding two million. It is the fourth largest US city and the largest in Texas. It covers an area of 600 sq. miles and is the Harris County seat.
The city is situated in the Houston-Sugarland-Bayton metropolitan area which is the seventh largest US metropolitan area, with 5.4 million people in 10 counties.
Houston's port ranks as the first in international commerce. It is also known for its aeronautics and oil industries-it leads the world in building oil field equipment for drilling for oil and gas.
The Texas Medical Center, the world's largest centre for healthcare and research has many institutions located in Houston. The city has an active arts scene for both visual and performing arts.
