There are many simple things that you can do to feel more comfortable when you leave your children with a sitter.
Here are just a few of them:
Be sure that the sitter has a telephone number of where you can be reached, and if you have a cell phone with you, that is good to give her too. Be sure that the telephone numbers for fire, ambulance, and police are somewhere in the open in case the sitter needs them.
Let the sitter know of a neighbor or another adult to call if necessary.
Keep a first aid chart and first aide kit on hand, and make sure the sitter knows where it is.
Lock all the doors and all the windows on the way out. Make sure the sitter knows how to use the locks and bolts and where all entrances and exits are located.
Close your curtains and blinds and do not allow for any deliveries while you are gone. Even a small thing like a pizza might lead to a disaster. Have snacks for the children and sitter already there.

You should always have a babysitter who is well known to you and your children.
If you aren't sure don't leave them. The babysitter should be a responsible person who is used to your children.
There's never any perfect guarentee that nothing will go wrong whilst you're away but as long as you know that ground rules are in place for both children and babysitter and that they'll be respected it should be alright. Children will often try and take advantage whilst their parents are away so do impress upon the babysitter that you need your rules and instructions to be adhered to no matter how tempting it is to bend the rules a little. Make sure that the babysitter never asks friends in without your permission and would never leave the children unattended once you have left the house.
Always leave a note of where you are, phone numbers, extra contact numbers, this is important just incase your mobile has no signal where you're going. Tell a friend or relation where you'll be and ask if they mind you giving their contact number too.
Strees to the babysitter that they should never allow someone else into the house be it friend or stranger whilst you're not there.
