What Does Cully Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Cully is an archaic word that means a fool or a dodo. In its verb form cully written as cullied, cullying or cullies implies to fool or to cheat. Cully can also mean to cheat or deceive.

It is believed cully could have been taken from the archaic noun cullion. It meant a rascal or a contemptible fellow. In the Middle English it was "coilon" which was from the Old French "coillon" in its turn from the Latin word "culleus".

The word does not seem to be in popular use anymore. Other words are now used that to some extent convey the meaning of cully, including a fool, stupid, imbecile, sucker, moron, dupe etc.
