      Greetings,

      What an important question!

The "Golden Rule" to be kind and considerate to others is respected in every religion.  Try to start treating others with care for their long-term well-being, and care for your own long-term well-being too.  You'll feel better about yourself right away, and others will consider you much improved.

Study this teaching by the Buddha,"Discourse to Rahual at Ambalatthaka"
www.accesstoinsight.org    in which he said to stop and think before doing anything --or while doing it, or afterwards--  to determine whether anyone may be harmed (including yourself).  If it seems bad, meaning harmful to you or others, then you must stop the action immediately.  Same goes with speech, and even with thinking: If at any point you realize this sort of talking or thinking isn't good for you and the world, stop it.  Try to put in into practice constantly.  Become beautifully careful about everything you do; this is how anyone anywhere has ever developed spiritually.  Following this advice, you can turn yourself into a blessing for the world.

Listen to these six teachings by Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi: "Mangala Sutta"  #1-6 (code # bo012 a-f), especially the first tape.www.sobhana.net   It is a detailed explanation of a powerful teaching of the Buddha on how to create for yourself the greatest blessings in life.  (Don't be put off by the funny-looking photo of Ven. Bodhi, he looks much nicer than that; don't be put off by the cacophonous chanting at the beginning, it lasts only a minute.)  It is important and useful information well worth listening to!

Take seriously the need to do good for others. You can go to your closest church/ synagogue/ temple and ask a leader there how you can help people who are worse off than you, and let them put you to work in your community.  Giving of yourself will bring out the best in you.  If you can go around and, say, offer to do odd jobs for money, and donate that money to a charity that helps poor people, you'll also feel good about that.  No one can take those kinds of good feelings away, they are yours for life (and maybe beyond).

      Best of luck to you!
