Porthamadog is in the United Kingdom and located on the Irish Sea coast. The constituent country of Porthmadog is Wales and the principal area is Gwynedd.

It was William Madocks who was responsible for bringing Porthmadog into existence. He built a sea wall that was known as cob and the purpose of his building the wall was to make use of Traeth Mawr for the use of agriculture.

Untill the year 1974, the town was known as Portmadoc, but it was renamed according the spelling and pronunciation prevalent in Wales.

Some people refuted the claim that the town is named after William Madocks as they think the town is named after Ynys Madoc, which is situated in Glaslyn Estuary and the famous resident of the area Madog ap Owain Gwynedd, who was known to have traveled with Columbus on his voyage to America.
