A bone marrow biopsy requires the semi-solid or spongy material in the marrow of the bone for testing. The sample of the bone marrow is obtained by a technique called bone marrow aspiration. Aspiration is suction of the spongy fluid for sampling purposes. A nurse first obtains the current history of diseases from the patient. His physical health is determined.
The sample is taken from the hip region or iliac bone or iliac crest. Hence, the patient is made to lie face down (prone position) and is administered a local anesthetic after cleaning the skin around the area. It can be with or without sedation. A sample from the sternum could also be taken but it presents greater risks and is painful. During aspiration, when the area hip region becomes numb, a special needed is introduced through the skin. It is inserted till it pierces and enters the marrow of the bone. The spongy marrow material is sucked out with the help of a syringe attached to the tip of the needle.
