In British term, Single cream implies a 'thin cream with low fat content' and it is produced from raw milk through the use of centrifuge system. And this type of cream is not at all appropriate for whipping.
In United Kingdom, cream is generally purchased as:-
Half cream (consists of 12% fat); Single cream (18%), Whipping cream (35%) and Double cream (48%) [Source: Wikipedia]. Hence, it is quite evident that single cream is the least fattening than that of double as it contains less fat than both whipping cream and double cream. It is only heavier than half cream, which comes with only about 12% of fat.
