Omar Khayyam was a Muslim thinker of eleventh century. His verses reflect his philosophical thoughts. The Rubaiyat give expression to some universal truths. Man is introduced to a world which he fails to understand. Thus, we find heaviness about every thing. Death and destiny stand out as the only clues to the mystery of human life. These verses have been translated and verified by Edward Fitzgerald.

The sun rises and brightens the whole universe. The poet gives a clarion call to the people to be up and start the day's work. Morning stands for work and activity.Omar Khayyam throws light on the short life of worldly hopes. He says that the hopes of men are short-lived like snow on the desert which melts away very soon. They come to an end within no time. We must not set our hearts on them.

The poet says that he saw a door but could not find any key to open it. Similarly he saw a curtain but could not see what was on the other side. Human life is too short to find the truth of such secrets.

Man's fate has been shrouded in mystery and he has to bear whatever he has been ordered for him. The future is unknown and unpredictable. Neither tears nor piety nor intelligence can change the fate of a man. It has been written once and for all and it is permanent.

All beautiful things are temporary. The spring season with its flowers, the youth and its joys are all temporary. No one seems to have any knowledge beyond the two ends of human existence.

Each Rubai has a thought-provoking theme. There are questions but no answer is suggested. However, they tend to make us realize that life must be lived actively as it may come to an end any time.
