The Bay of Pigs (Bahia de Cochinos in Spanish) is a place on the Cuban coast in the Matanzas province which was the site of a failed invasion attempt of Cuban exiles backed by the United States to overthrow the regime of Cuban leader Fidel Castro. The invasion took place on April 17, 1961 and counted on the support of the local population for its success which failed to materialize and ultimately resulted in the failure of the attempt.
Later analysis of the failed invasion attempt revealed that the Bay of Pigs was not the best spot to launch the invasion as it was primarily a marshy land that hampered the movement of the exiles. Also the support of the United States in terms of actual involvement was non existent especially with respect to aerial activities which enabled in the Cuban troops being able to capture the exiles though the rate of casualties was higher among the Cuban troops. The Bay of Pigs incident resulted in further deterioration of Us-Cuban relations which led to the Missile Crisis in the following year in 1962.
