I don't think the rumour is true. I saw a video where a man trained his dog to retrieve cups of a certain colours. He didn't keep them in any specific order, and mixed them up all the time.
He got the exact cup that the man told him to get every single time. So, after seeing that, I don't think that they are colour blind.
