There were originally nine major world cities which made a bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games back in 2003. These were reduced to a potential list of five just a year later and both Paris and London soon became the leading contenders.
It was announced on July 6th 2005 that London had won the chance to host the Summer games. The cost has increased and the latest figures now estimate a total of £9billion.
A new Olympic park will be built in Stratford, East London and the main stadium will hold around 80,000 spectators. The sailing events will be held at Weymouth and Portland harbours in Dorset.
The games will be held between 27th July and 12th August 2012 and this will be London's third time to host the Olympics. They were held here in 1908 and then in 1948 following a four year cancellation due to the Second World War.
