Try to contain the droppings with tarp. Also, you want to wear a mask to help you not breath in the dust.

Removing the ceiling texture "could" be more dangerous than leaving it in place. I spent 35 years as an Architectural Specifications Writer and have some knowledge as to what was used to texture ceilings. Some texture sprays used expanded vermiculite which can contain asbestos. Also some of the early plasters had asbestos added to give the plaster workability. ASBESTOS is a know as a Cancer causing substance. Some textured coating contained Mineral Fiber, which is considered a Class II carcinogen (Can cause Cancer in laboratory animals same as aspartame used in diet soft drinks and some no sugar sweeteners). Some textures used expanded polystyrene which is the stuff the white foam wall insulation is made of, this is (or was 15 years ago) considered harmless. Newer texture coatings are mainly just thickened paint or thinned out drywall joint filler.

Asbestos removal is a job for the pros and very expensive. Encapsulation (leaving in place covered so it can't come loose) has been acceptable. If removing materials other than asbestos keep children out of the house during removal. Wear the best face mask you can afford, vacuum every thing VERY well changing bags and filters frequently before children return. Also remove or cover and clean furniture.

All is not as bad as you think. I am going to be 69 in June and spent 3 1/2 years in college chain smoking as I shoveled asbestos in a brake shoe remanufacturing company. Also, I have had Agent Orange exposure from walking through it while spraying it in the mid 60's.
