'The Little Match Girl' is actually a sad but wonderful story of a little orphan girl who sells Matches in the snow-strewn and cold streets, completely unsheltered and unprotected from the fierce winter. It was written by Hans Christian Anderson, who is one of the most sensitive and gifted writers of this World. The Little Match Girl, after selling her Matches, huddled in a street corner. She only had a few rags to cover her and protect her from the cold.

Suddenly, she saw a shooting star streak through the sky. She had heard that a shooting star signifies a soul being taken to heaven, and she believed it to be her grandmother. To warm herself, she struck a match and saw in its light, a beautiful table with dinner, but it vanished as the flame of the match died, on striking another match she saw a Christmas Tree but as the match stopped glowing, the tree vanished, and finally, in the light of a third match, she saw a warm stove, but it soon disappeared with the flame.

She finally saw her grandmother in the light of another match. She feared that she might disappear like the feast, the tree and the stove. She took out all her boxes of Matches and burned them. Her grandmother then took her in her arms and they both went soaring away from the cold and pains of Earth. People find the little match girl the next day, frozen besides her burned up matches.
