If your dog continues to yelp when it has already been fed and watered or it suddenly develops a limp or puts his weight on one part of the leg and not the other, then you should immediately check to discover if there is something wrong.

The best thing to do is to lay your dog down and reassure them so he or she does not panic or does not feel stressed out as they will be in pain.

It could be more than just a sprain and it could be a possible leg break, so you want to be as gentle as possible and avoid all hard surfaces. Lay them on the couch and make sure your dog is comfortable. If your vet has previously recommended it, you can give your dog paracetamol for some temporary pain relief or you can get your dog's paw and soak it in a mixture of water and an Epsom salt solution. Above all, rest for your dog is the best solution for the problem to heal quickly.

If you witness any of these situations happening to your dog then it is important you consult your vet as they will be able to tell you what the matter is and what your dog has done to its body.

Your dog may need to undergo a series of tests as well as X-rays to find the cause of the problem. If it just a sprain then this should heal naturally within six to eight weeks with proper rest or some slight bathing of the wounded paw if you discover such symptoms.

Hopefully, after a period of two months you can let your dog roam free on a trial walk. This should be no more than 10 to 15 minutes to see if the paw is healing.

You can tell this if your dog is not putting pressure on it leg. Or it is limping a lot. You should take it to vet soon if you find such symptoms. But for home medication you can give it aspirin for pain relief. Soak its paw daily with Epsom salt solution. It will heal it quickly. You should use this solution as per indications written on its bottle. Sprained and broken legs take time to heal but rest is very important.

Sprain is caused when the paw turns to wrong side suddenly and the weight of the body pulls the ligaments in the paw. There are three ligaments in the paw and the severity of sprain depends on then that which ligament has been pulled by the body. The result is bleeding within the muscles or inflammation and sever pain.So your dog might be suffering from sprain as it feels pain in it.Secondly also check that there is no wound on the pad of her paw it might be other reason for her pain.

I would suggest to try and gently move up and down, if your dog yelps or pulls away it might be sprained or broken. If it swollen it is most likely that it is broken but you should take him to the vet asap so that the vet may take an x-ray to be sure if it is broken. If you are not able to get your dog to a vet until monday I would suggest that you keep your dog of its paw the best that you can, so that if it is broken it won't get more damaged. Good luck, hope your dog gets better.

I stepped on my puppies' paw and he screamed out in pain and then just let it go limp. Is it possible that it's broken or sprained? He's running around right now but he is limping a little bit.

My dog went swimming in lake with lots of rocks....also lots of grass by lake....started limping and next day, today, his paw is swollen and hot.....his toenails protrude far beyond his fur compared to the other paw.... Its his front paw and he just is laying low and licking it.... For an active labrador who follows me wherever I go this is a shocker ....no vet listed for zip code l3488...I put his paw in cold water with an anticeptic and he licks it off but doesn't object to having it in water....much more sensitive today then yesterday afternoon when it happened....I'll get him to a vet by monday but being a holiday weekend I can't find anyone. ...any pain med relief I can give him...he's on deramax for artritis...he's a great rescued dog as is his sister or dtr.....we took them both as they were found together ...thanks

You should try to look at his/her paw, but if he/her rejects from you,you should wait a few hours and try to see what's wrong with it and if his/her still rejects you should take him/her to the doctor!

If your dog experiences a great difficulty in walking or roaming around the home or garden, then it is hundred percent possible that your dog's paw has something wrong with it. You should dress the wound appropriately and quickly consult your vet about this serious dilemma.
