Minimalism basically describes actions in different forms of art and design, particularly visual art and music, where the effort is dragged down to its most basic features and centre of self expression. In various other fields of art it has been used to explain the plays of Samuel Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the editing and tales of Gordon Lish and the stories of Raymond Carver, and even the automobile designs of Colin Chapman. Even specifically in the field of arts it is recognized with developments in post-World War II Western Art, most powerfully with the visual arts. The term has long-drawn-out to include a step in music which reflects repetition and iteration. An example would be the music of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Adams, and Terry Riley.
