After Sewing The Wall Hanging, What Is The Best Way To Prepare It To Hang On The Wall?

Answer Question

Depends on the size of the tapestry.

If it's small enough to be framed, you might want to.  This will protect it from dust or damage.  You can tape or blue-tack it to a sheet of paper or cardboard inside under the frame glass.

If it's a bit bigger and can't be framed: You may still want to spray it with a sealant spray, again to protect it from stains, damage or dust deposits.

Most commonly, tapestries are hung off of a horizontal rod (that passes through loops or a band of fabric at the top of the tapestry).  Since this is a home-made hanging, you will need to add the loops or other mechanism for hooking over the top rod; a good crafts shop should be able to advise if you are unsure how to do this.

Hanging rods can be as simple as a cut-to-size wooden dowel or a custom-made metal bar.  The bar must have a single piece of string or rope tied through each end, to hook over a nail or hook in the wall.

Or the bar may have supports at each end. With either wood or metal, decorative endcaps may be used and a hole drilled through the rod adjacent to the endcap. Extra-long finishing nails are installed in the supporting surface, sticking out so the heads will insert into the edges of the supporting rod. This method may also be used right next to the ceiling where there wouldn't be space for scavenger's method.
