It's easy to appreciate the luxurious look of handmade curtains. Making curtains yourself is a great way to get custom-made curtains without the designer prices.  

For windows that are not custom sizes, handmade curtains are an especially good way to save money. It is very difficult to find curtains in shops that are big enough for large bay windows in Victorian houses, for instance. Alternatively, buying them from a designer might cost in the region of £1,000.  Making them yourself could cost £200 or significantly less. Of course, there are a number of factors that determine the cost, like the choice of fabric and how much is needed.  

Another advantage to making your own curtains is that you can shop around for the fabric.  For anyone who enjoys looking at fabric, this can be a joyous task!  You can coordinate the fabric with the room's colour scheme. Also, you can choose a weight of fabric that is appropriate for the room.  A lighter fabric would be appropriate for a kitchen, while a heavier, more formal one would suit the dining room.  By buying the fabric yourself, you have the opportunity to shop around for the best quality and price.

Finally, making our own curtains is rewarding. No doubt, for larger windows especially, making curtains can be hard work and time ~ consuming.  Every time you look at them, however, you will feel a certain pride that you made them yourself!
