There are so many methods used that I can't begin to address them all here. The term "data processing" (DP) is somewhat obsolete today but it does provide a frame of reference that may be helpful.
Most DP systems were oriented around one of two architectures: Batch and Interactive. Batch DP involves having the computer process a large number of input records (often referred to as the "input batch") and produce output files and reports.
Interactive DP is closer to the way things are done today in that a user will enter information into a computer or terminal and will receive immediate feedback on the information they have entered.
