This has increased from 1,116,400 in 1991 and 1,136,500 in 2001, indicating a 1.7 percent rise in population, this falls below the UK average of 2 percent. Of the 1,156,100 people believed to be living in Lancashire, it is estimated that approximately 93.4 percent of these are of white origin and 5.3 percent are South Asian.

    The county of Lancashire itself is ranked 17th largest county in England covering an area of 3,075 kilometers square. The current estimated population implies that there is a population density of 398 people per square kilometer, this is above the national average of 354 people per square kilometer. In the 2001 British Census, 78.3 percent of the population of Lancashire were believed to be Christians, with 10.4 percent having no religion, and 6.8 percent having not stated a religion.
