The act of binding or tying is known as ligation. The condition of being bound by something is also called as ligation. The word is used increasingly in reference to the act of sealing a blood vessel with a ligature to prevent bleeding. Surgeons are often known to make use of a ligature to constrict the blood flow from a broken blood vessel.
A ligature can be a tying or binding material like a bandage, a wire, a cord or a thread. A bond of such a nature which comes into effect while applying or using a ligature is called as ligation. For example, a tubal ligation implies a surgical method of female sterilization in which the fallopian tubes are tied by a surgical procedure.
