I had to think quite a lot about this one. I'm inclined to go with KISS. THe clue is in the detail about "GOING on vacation." THis should mean that he and his family are just leaving; therefore it would make sense that he kisses her goodbye.

Of course, the unmarried (and presumably childless) neighbour would also be touched if the little boy missed her; but she wouldn't really know that until he came back and told her so; not while going. (Of course, he could write her a postcard saying "I miss you"! However, this isn't mentioned, and anyway "going" still wouldn't fit; it would have to be "while away on vacation." On the other hand, there is no doubt that she would be touched if he kissed her just before departure; so I'll stick with that answer. Hope it's the right one.
