John was a good King, because his elder brother wasn't! Richard 1, called Coeur de Lion, bled England dry with his penchant for fighting, usually someone else's battles, so that when John came along, there was no money available. So, ever resourceful John robbed the Church! The Church didn't like it, and excommunicated him, and for good measure placed England under and interdict, forbidding christenings, marriages and burials. So, your sister was queing up to be married, while your mother was waiting to be buried! John eventually overcame these problems(!), and dragged England up to be a leading European country at his death in 1216.
