What Are Back To Back Houses And When Were They First Built?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

As many people moved from the countryside from rural areas during the Industrial revolution a huge demand in housing needs arose.

The industrial cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow were not prepared for the influx of large numbers of people needing houses.

Manchester suffered more than any other city in this respect. Developers had a free reign in what they built and most houses for the workers and poor were substandard. profit was the main concern of builders and landlords.

Back to back terraced housing was a product of the Industrial Revolution. These dwellings had no back garden, sometimes a small yard. The means to produce food for the individual and families was nearly impossible in this type of house.

The only part of the building not connected to another house ( unless it was an end terrace) would be the front.

In Nottingham , in the 1840's -out of around 11,000 houses 7,000 were of the back to back type.
