Seasonal Affective Disorder is when a person feels run down, tired and generally a bit sad during the winter months. It is a natural response to the long, dark days, the cold weather and the effects of colds and flu. A few people experience exaggerated symptoms which doctors have recognised as a medical condition referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D as it is also known. The lack of daylight can leave sufferers feeling depressed and having problems with sleep and eating.
Some sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder use a light box to simulate daylight during the dark winter months. The additional daylight fools the brains pattern into thinking that the day is longer. The treatment is said to be quite successful and is a real help to those people who live in parts of the world where it is very dark in the winter months, such as Iceland.
