I found the problem listed in the manual troubleshooting guide and ait said check salt usage and salt setting but when examining the manual schematics, I can find no reference to salt usage or salt settings.

I would look in the manual and call either the water softener manufacturer or a licensed service representative to ask them about it.
I know that our old water softener used to go through salt like crazy, but I don't remember the name of it (it was a tall white one, that's all I can tell you. Sorry!)
We are now also a family of two, and we use only 40 pounds of salt every couple of months or so in our City Boss (which is tan in color and is not very tall), which we just love!
Please let us know what you find out.
