Sea snakes are of different species, but their natural habitat is in the tropical oceans. They are found mainly in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. The yellow-bellied sea snake lives in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The olive sea snake lives in the areas that have coral reefs. They are related to the cobras. They are an aquatic species of snakes and not a species that dwells on land.

Their bodies have a moderately large build. They rarely exceed a length of two metres. In comparison to the large size of their bodies, however, they have smaller heads. Their bodies are compressed and hence suitable for swimming. The snakes are adept at swimming in the sea, but cannot help being clumsy or struggle for help when they are brought ashore. They have broad ventral scales and breathe either through their lungs or thorough their skin.
