               Incense is made up of aromatic and organic materials. These materials are chosen for the fragrant smoke they release on being burned. The scent that spreads by the burning of incense depends on its specific composition. Incense was an ancient article of trade and was and is extensively used in religious ceremonies all over the world. Along with the use in religious rituals, incense materials and their smoke are prescribed in the sphere of alternate medication too. The form of incense available in the local markets have changed in time.

               The fragrant materials in incense like sandalwood, musk and the essences of rose, lilies and other flowers emit the aroma and produce the fragrant smoke when burned. Many types of fragrant wood, herbs and oils are used individually or in combination.

               The aromatic materials are treated and dried. They are then marketed as sticks or granules that are used for specific occasion. The fragrant materials are ones synonymous with certain religious ceremonies. Essential oils or other extracted material are responsible for the strength of the fragrance. Incense sticks are freely available in the oriental markets and much of its use is in the cultures of the East. The quantity and quality are priced according to the fragrant materials used.
