On this day in history, April 25th:

On this day in 1983, an American school, Samantha Smith received a letter from the Russian president Andropov. She was invited to come and visit him and meet Soviet children. President Reagan hated this because it put a happier face on the 'Evil Empire' of the Soviet Union that people had worked so hard to invent. Samantha Smith became a world figure for peace, but was sadly killed in a plane crash in 1985. She was the greatest threat to the Reagan Administrations image of Russia as the aggressor, she was the world's greatest hope for Peace.

On this day in 1901, New York became the first state in the USA to require drivers have license plates on their vehicles.

On this dayin 1974, army rebels take control of Portugal, after a coup in which very few lives were lost.

On this day in 2002, two brothers were cleared of the murder of Damilola Taylor in London.
