Does The Mole Stay Permanently Underground?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

With the exception of Australia there are 19 different species of mole spread on all continents. Moles stay underground permanently and only come up very occasionally just after the rains.  They have adapted well to their underground lifestyle and though they are practically blind and deaf they have other senses that compensate for their inabilities. They have a good sense of smell and toughened muzzles. They have silky coats that allow them to move along smoothly in their tunnels. Most importantly, they have very strong forefeet for burrowing. They generally feed on earthworms and insect larvae that are buried in the soil. They are solitary animals and each mole has a little fortress of his own that has very well constructed and connected tunnels. They even have emergency exits connecting the central chamber to the main exit.
