The recommended daily intake for calcium has been determined by many different clinical trials and observational studies. The requirements of the body change with age ~ a child needs more calcium in the diet because the bones and teeth grow at a rapid rate during this period of life.

In the first six months of life, a baby needs 210 milligrams of calcium every day, which it gets easily as its major source of food is milk, one of the richest sources of calcium. In the second six months of life, this requirement rises fo 270 milligrams per day. Between the ages of 1 and 3, a growing child needs 500 milligrams per day. Between 4 and 8 years, this rises to 800 milligrams a day and then, between the ages of 9 and 18 years, the requirement for calcium is at is maximum, 1300 milligrams per day.

After the age of 18 the daily intake required for good health declines and adults aged 19 to 50 need 1000 milligrams per day. Older adults, over the age of 50 are recommended to take in slightly more ~ about 1200 milligrams per day to avoid osteoporosis.
