They were the people of the goddess Danu.
They were said to have originally inhabited the islands to the west.
They brought with them to Ireland, the Dagda's Cauldron, the Spear of Lugh, The Stone of Fal ( stone of knowedge) and the sword of Nuada.
According to the Lebor Gabala Erenn or Book of Invasions they were the fifth group of inhabitants of Ireland.
They were said to have arrived in dark clouds, landing on the mountains of Conmaiene Rein in Connachta. Their arrival brought darkness which covered the sun for three daya and nights.
They defeated the Firbolg or Men of Bags ( probably called this because of the type of baggy leg coverings they wore), the earlier inhabitants of Ireland at the first battle of Mag Tuireadh. They then fought the Formorians.
They were finally defeated by the Milesians and driven underground. The ancient burial mounds which are found all over the landscape of Ireland are still linked with the Tuatha de Danann.
