Identity cards include passports, birth certificates, driver's licenses, college ID cards, Library Cards, professional association cards, election ID cards, club membership cards etc. They are generally issued for a particular purpose. Allowing a person to travel, drive a vehicle, pilot an aircraft, enter the premises and work for a particular organization, cast his or her vote, enter a particular club etc.
ID cards in the form of the National ID Card in the UK are going to be introduced in the United Kingdom from 2009 onwards or sooner. These cards will contain information relating to a person's finger prints, particulars and photograph. It is believed that is a step towards making the society into a police state; that the cards will make it easier for the state to infringe on personal civil liberties and waste significant amount of money.
