St Cuthbert was a Benedictine monk and became the bishop of Lindisfarne, Holy Island, in the late 600s. After his ministry, he retired to a remote island off the Northumberland coast and led a life of prayer. There are many stories of St. Cuthbert performing miracles, the most common of which was the regular miraculous appearance of food. He would be able to ask God for something to eat, which would mysteriously appear on request. St. Cuthbert would halve the food, which was usually some bread or fish, with whoever he was with at the time. Also, some years after his death, St. Cuthbert's burial casket was opened and his body found to be perfectly preserved.
After a raid on Holy Island by the Vikings in 793, the monks who resided on the island fled and took the body of St. Cuthbert along with the famous Lindisfarne Gospels. Cuthbert now rests in Durham Cathedral.
