Elimination is always a viable method of solving a system of equations. That method, or one similar to it, is the one used by many equation-solving computer programs.

For manual use, it is a good method to use of the coefficients of one of the variable are in a "nice" relation to one another. Preferably, only one equation must be multiplied by a small integer before it is combined with the other equation. Preferably, the two equations can simply be added or subtracted because the coefficients match or are opposites.
