Ear infections in dogs can be either yeast or bacterial in
origin. They are treated with topical
medications rather than oral antibiotics. Amoxicillin is often not effective in dogs for skin/ear infections.
Take your dog to the veterinarian who will make sure your
dog does not have a foreign body--like a foxtail, grass awn, or blade of
grass--in the ear canal. Next the
discharge will be examined under a microscope to see if yeast or bacteria is
present. Depending upon the severity of
infection your veterinarian may want to clean the ears, prescribe a topical
anti-fungal/anti-biotic, topical steroid (if very infalmed) and in very bad
cases-oral anti-biotics and oral steroids.
If your dog has recurrent ear infections they may be secondary to
allergies.Ann Falk, DVM

Before giving your dog any type of prescription medicine I would recommend that you should consult your vet first. A simple phone call will usually be enough. You do not want to risk overdosing your pet.

You have great answers already. I'll just add that Amoxycillin is the only drug I have ever taken for which I had an allergic reaction. I don't think your dog and I are related but what is your plan if he has a bad reaction to that drug?
