What Is The Size Of The Hole In Golf?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The size of a golf hole is standardized to have a diameter of 4.25 inches. This standardization of the hole was done by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, with some assistance from the links at Musselburgh. The first known hole-cutter was invented in 1829. That first hole-cutter used a cutting tool that was 4.25 inches in diameter. The R&A approved that size and so adopted it in their standardization rules in 1891. The reasons for why that cutting tool was 4.25 inches in diameter are not known, but it must have been a completely arbitrary decision. This standardized hole size was not modified even after the larger golf ball having a diameter of 1.68 inches was accepted in the U.S.A. in 1931.
