The job of a sales manager is primarily to manage the sales team, and make sure they produce what has been decided between the directors of the company.
A target is set , normally by the marketing manager, sales manager and C.E.O. together, and then it is the sales managers full time job to make sure this target is met for the week, month and year. His salary and bonus are based on this, so it is rather important to him or her.
How does he/she do this? by gentle encouragement, nagging and sometimes, pushing, bullying and bribing each member of the sales team, whose behaviour, figures and ultimate position
he/she has control over, and must report on. If his/her team does not produce his/her head is on the block. He/She must check them more, control their movements more, threaten them, and if nothing else works, remove bonuses and commissions. He/She really is the person cracking the whip over the salesmans head. If they do well he/she gets a bonus on each salesmans sales. So no dead wood.
