Where Is The World's Largest And Biggest Dam Located?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Three gorges dam, in Hubei province, on the Yellow (Yangtze) River in central eastern China.

The dam was completed in May 2006, and still receives a storm of international controversy because of the population displacement, cost over-runs, and environmental damage its construction has caused.

The Three Gorges dam is 2309 metres (over a mile) wide and 185 metres high (over 600 feet tall).  Project construction is still ongoing.  It is planned to have 26 generators when completed in 2009, and it will hopefully generate 84.7 billion kwh of electricity annually (energy that will be relatively low in carbon emissions).

For comparison, the highest dam in the world is the Rogun (in Turkey) at 1099 feet.  Several other dams in the world are up to about 1 km wide, but not more than 2 km.
